2017: Day 8
It shouldn’t take a tragedy like the one in Abbotsford on November 6 to thank those that selflessly place themselves in harm’s way for our safety. Thankfully, losing first responders is a relatively rare occurrence in Canada, which is why it was a sobering moment. We want to thank our friends (you know who you are) who put their lives on the line every day to make this world a much safer place. You’re welcome to come over any time and we’ll make you one of these drinks as long as you’re not on duty (because there may be just a little vodka in this concoction).
The First Responder is made with citron vodka, pomegranate juice, a cardamom simple syrup and cardamom bitters. Oh, and smoke. Lots of smoke to symbolize one of the many first responder events. Plus smoke is way cool. This adds a touch of (you guessed it) smokiness to the drink. The drink was placed in a plastic bag where smoke was infused for about 5 minutes. We added a little more at the end for the photo op and to make sure our kitchen smells like camp fire for the next week. Some raspberries and blackberries were also added to make this a healthy drink.
Cheers to all of you! And to the memory of John Davidson, who we understand was a pretty good guy. He didn’t deserve to die so young and so senselessly. But at least he died a hero, though not knowing the impact he had on the community. The photos and video of his procession spoke volumes. We know there is a family and many friends hurting pretty badly this holiday season. There is no way we can thank you enough.
